Announcing: Paint Club

For some time, I have been thinking how great it would be to have continuing engagement with my students outside of class. I have met so many of you in workshops and thought how cool it would be to be able to support you and your learning on a regular basis. And I want it to be affordable for you, and also make enough that it can be a robust and long-lived venture. So: I'm pleased to announce Aimee Erickson's Paint Club. (yay!!)

  • We'll meet twice a month in live online sessions (meetings will be recorded, so you can watch them later)
  • Topics include:
  • Paint-along color exercises
  • Lessons on various painting problems
  • Painting Makeovers (like the ones in Plein Air Techniques for Artists)
  • Longer demonstrations
  • There's a Chat Group where you can post your work, ask questions, and share inspiration
  • I'm building a library of instructional videos and painting prompts, which you can access any time.

All levels are welcome. I mostly paint in oil, but may also demo in other media. It's not a class, exactly, although there is instruction--it's more of a cross between a mentorship, a learning space, and a group inspiration/joy meetup. The inaugural meeting is Wednesday, March 27 from 9-11 am. Regular meetings are the first and third Mondays of the month at 9 am, (please note there may be some exceptions to the schedule). I have a really good feeling about this and I hope you'll join me!

Think Like a Painter: Still Life and Portrait

IN PERSON. Scottsdale Artists' School, April 29 - May 2, 2024

In nature, light reveals color. In painting, color reveals light. Learning to understand lighting phenomena gives us more freedom in choosing how we paint what we see, rather than having to look to nature for every decision. Plan on some serious learning in a lighthearted atmosphere!

Carpe Diem! Seize the Day--and the Brush

IN PERSON. Warehouse 521 in Nashville, Tennessee. May 14-17, 2024

This is a four day paint-from-life workshop in the studio. We will have still life setups and a model to allow us to approach the eternal questions of color, value, composition, figure-ground relationships, and what makes brushwork beautiful. What is it you see in something that inspires you to paint it? An awareness of your inspiration can guide the decisions you make as you paint. There will be demos and individual instruction. Set up to paint when you arrive--the first morning, there'll be a series of brief demos alternating with painting practice. Later on there will be extended painting sessions to make time to get into development of a painting.

Three-Quarters Lighting Challenge

ONLINE at Acrylic University.. This is a pre-recorded series of eight videos.

Join Aimee Erickson in her studio as you create eight beautiful still life paintings. Walk with her through each painting using traditional 3/4 lighting. Explore how edges, highlights, shadow, and light bring dimension to your work.

Note: 3/4 lighting means that 3/4 of the object is in light and 1/4 is in shadow (a wonderful, classical way to describe an object.)
